How to Make The Most from your Dallas Headshots

Dallas Portraits for Models and Actors

As a leading Dallas Headshot photographer, I get asked about this every week, and today's blog post is oriented to Dallas actors and models wanting to get the right photos that will best advance their careers.

I will not waste my precious experience and industry know-how on those merely dabbling in the fields of acting and modeling, but rather for those who are serious about getting ahead and willing to invest the time, effort and money into their OWN success because they believe they are worth it!

Dallas Headshots and Your Representation:
First, for those of you actors and models who do not have representation (meaning an agent or talent agency or modeling agency), YOUR headshots needs to be designed to attract the attention of that talent agency and get them to BELIEVE in you enough to "take you on" as someone worth investing in sending precious jobs to.

In this position of starting out, you want to prove yourself to them -- demonstrate that you have multiple "looks" that are marketable. So ask my about my 3-look "standard" headshot session and my 5-look "professional" Dallas headshot sessions. (Call 877-858-0071)

Second, if you have an agent or manager that promotes you to get more acting or modeling gigs, get his/her input! Your representation will most likely have lots of first-hand input, so it's best to get with them to know what kinds of headshots they believe will best promote you.

In your position, you might need a new kind of headshot to help appeal to a new aspect of your modeling or acting industry. Your previous photos might not best represent your capacity in a certain area that has come up to audition for. I will help you "nail" the right image to best land that role or gig!

After you book with me, it is a good time to begin thinking about what you want to convey in your pictures? What types of roles do you want to play? Are you gearing for catalogs? TV commercials? theatre or films?

Don't just do what you think you "should"; do what you truly "enjoy" doing for that is where your heart is and that is what you will probably be best at. Not only should you dress for a specific character types throughout your photo session, but your wardrobe should match that too.

After all, Headshots in Dallas deliver the best results for you when they are specifically geared towards the role you are submitting for. The smart Dallas actor or model knows that being cute or handsome is not enough and this "match" of your headshot to the role can make or break your success when a casting director is looking though hundreds of photos!

How To Dress For Your Dallas Headshot Photography
Bring twice the wardrobe choices to the looks you're planning to shoot. Think of layering to make it more interesting, Don't pick too trendy clothes that will be outdated quickly. Pick solid colors, avoid loud, busy patterns, logs and florals.  Incorporate bold color, as well as neutral tones in our wardrobe options at our photo shoot.

Consider that accessories like hats, scarfs, gloves and glasses also help to create a character.  Talk with me to choose the specific colors that compliment your skin tone and hair and or eye color.

Make sure you bring the right undergarments for the session such as the right bra type (nude strapless) and color as well as any body contouring garments enhancing your features.

Bring your photoshoot wardrobe clean, ironed and on hangers. Study yourself in a mirror and practice expressions. Be aware of any unwanted facial expressions such as eye squinting or showing too much of your gums when smiling as well as nose and forehead wrinkling.

There should be some eyebrow shaping for both, men and women. For your eyebrows, use a local beauty salon. But remember, thinner eyebrows are not better, less is not more when it comes to eyebrows, but a "clean line" is what we are looking for. If you are prone to skin irritations, have hot wax hair removal treatments done a minimum of two to three days prior to the session and clean any strays with the tweezers. Men should shave early in the morning not just before the shoot. I had too many men show up for the photo session with red blotchy, irritated skin.

Manicure your nails. Choose a soft nail color to avoid distractions from your face. This is especially important if you plan close-up photos including your hands or show your hands in a ¾ shot. If you plan doing your own make-up stay with a neutral color palette (no blue eye shadow or bright red lips) bring your make-up bag especially powder, hairspray and your hairbrush/comb.

And as an extra tip, eat at a protein bar on your way to my headshot studio so you have good energy and not feeling lethargic/ fatigued. Always carry water so you stay dehydrated.
