Tip #1. CLOTHES -- Choose the exact clothing and accessory items to wear in advance for headshot photo shoot.  If you need to do shopping, then do it. Too many people rush on the day-of and sometimes their ideal outfit needs laundering or has wrinkles, etc. Put your clothes in a hanging clothes bag the day before your headshot photography session, so you're not stressing to gather out outfit(s) the next day.

A headshot photo pictures the shoulders, or mid-chest, up to the top of the head, so the shirt is the most important item of clothing. So we do not want clothes that distract from your face. Never wear shirts that have busy patterns, as they distract from your face. Pick a solid colored shirt that elongates or features your neck.

Tip #2. SKIN -- Drink plenty of water in the days prior to your headshot phootshoot, as this will keep your skin nice, smooth and clear. Eat healthy foods (cucumbers are water-rich, for example), as fried / salty foods, and alcohol, cause bloating and water retention.  Also avoid excessive sun exposure, which can make you look tired and leave your skin irritated. Get plenty of sleep to avoid dark circles under your eyes!

Tip #3. HAIR -- Choose your haircut and style a week or two in advance.  Since you should look like your headshot photos, choose a hairstyle that you can easily recreate for auditions or meetings.  A neutral hairstyle that highlights the natural curve and shape of your face (round, long, wide, narrow, jailing, etc.) is your best choice for a headshot. Don’t worry too much about frizzies/flyaways as we can tame those with both hairspray and retouching. We don’t want hair that covers your face and gets in your eyes.

Tip #4. FACIAL HAIR -- Prepare your facial hair for your headshots by bleaching, plucking and/or choosing a style for shaving facial hair in advance. Be sure to do these things a couple of days before your session. Guys especially need to tend to nose hairs, and their eyebrows.
